Richmond Mounties are looking for a suspect who grabbed a 10-year-old girl in a field at Whiteside Elementary School, near Williams Road and Garden City, on Wednesday shortly before lunch.

The incident occurred shortly before 11:30, when the student was running a lap in a field directly south of the school.

As the girl was running towards the male suspect, who had apparently been using his cell phone to photograph the area, he allegedly grabbed her on the arm.

Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang said police would like the suspect to come forward so police can determine what happened.

“Though the student advised our investigator that she did not feel threatened, the incident is considered unusual and the motive unclear,” he said. “The police would very much like to locate this individual and speak with him.”

The suspect is described as an Asian male, between 40 and 50 years old, who stands about five feet seven inches to five feet 10 inches tall. He has a medium build, black hair, was clean shaven and was wearing brown pants and a black and blue sweater.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Richmond RCMP Cpl. Jason Pickering, of the youth section, at 604-278-1212.

In a letter sent out to parents Wednesday afternoon, James Whiteside principal Rachael Corneil described the incident in greater detail.

In the letter, the student was “approached by a man attempting to take pictures of her at the far end of our field. As she turned to walk away, he pulled on her arm to take another picture. She ran back to the school and the police were notified.”
